FROM OUT A DARKER SEA
So Percussion’s From Out a Darker Sea integrates live music, film and installation into an evening length performance inspired by a UK coal-mining heritage town in East Durham. The coastal town of Seaham has struggled to re-invent itself after nearly 25 years of a crushing economic downturn following its mine closing during the Thatcher administration in 1992.
DeChiazza acted as a consultant to So Percussion during two phases in the development of From Out a Darker Sea, advising the ensemble on staging and structure before the work’s premiere, and again as the work transitioned from a site-specific performance to a touring one.
